Augusta honors its service men and women who served in peacetime and in war, with special honor for those who gave their lives for their country and for freedom. Those remembered include Frank L Eaton, Bernard H Honadel, Frank Samuel Scott, Clinton E Spondly, Karl M Spondly, and Otto R Wegner of World War I; Ervin H Goede, Raymond J Hanson, Carl W Johnson, Ruggles E Monroe, Henry E Radtke, Lawrence J (Chick) Rugotzke, John (Jack) Webster Smith, Walter E Smith, Reuben O Staats, Clarence E (Happy) Zank, and La Vern A Hageness of World War II; Levi Pettis, born 2/26/1761 and died 11/5/1872, the first known Augusta veteran, who served in the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812; Civil War veterans Sewall Bliss, George W Campbell, William Casporus, James W Crouch, William H Guppee, John F Hale, Orrin C Hall, William Norton, Charles M Sargent, and Oscar Sargent; Charles R Helgerson and Ralph E Knuth of the Korean Conflict; Dale A Erdman, Rodney J Lawson, and Daniel L Westlie of the Vietnam War; and those who served in the Mexican War, the Spanish American War, the Persian Gulf War, and Afghanistan/Iraq.
