The Whiteford (Price) Archeological Site in Saline County, Kansas, preserves an important Central Plains habitation site and an unusually well-preserved burial complex near the Smoky Hill and Saline rivers. Occupied from about 1000 to 1350 CE, it appears to have been a small village with twelve to fifteen house mounds, likely tied to earth lodges, though agriculture later erased those surface features. The site became especially notable for a burial pit containing more than 140 skeletal remains and associated objects that point to a prehistoric farming, hunting, and fishing community. First brought to wider notice in 1873, it was later excavated, used as a tourist attraction, and eventually protected as a National Historic Landmark.
