Cherokee was the county's most thriving early village. It was surveyed in 1832 on lands of Robt. Edminson, Dr. S.A. Morton and Alex. Thompson. Following the building of the N.Y.C. Ry. and the founding of Huntsville in 1846, it began to decline. In 1846, its business calendar included two large hotels, four or more stores, two wagon makers, three blacksmith shops, and other business, along with two Presbyterian and a Methodist churches, a public school, and a relay stage station.
