Luray Caverns, discovered near Luray, Virginia, in 1878, became one of the best-known show caves in the United States for its richly decorated chambers of stalactites, stalagmites, columns, flowstone, and reflective pools. Found by five local men after digging into a cool sinkhole on Cave Hill, it soon drew scientific attention and widespread tourism. The active cave, formed in Lower Ordovician Beekmantown dolomite, includes features such as Dream Lake and the Great Stalacpipe Organ. Despite early ownership disputes and litigation, its fame grew quickly, and it remains a major attraction, recognized as a National Natural Landmark and significant both geologically and historically.
