Grant–Kohrs Ranch in Deer Lodge, Montana, preserves one of the northern Rockies’ best-known ranching operations and the broader history of the western cattle industry from the 1850s onward. Johnny Francis Grant established the ranching base there after the fur trade declined and helped spur the nearby community that became Deer Lodge. After selling the property in 1866, Conrad Kohrs expanded it into a vast cattle empire, with his half-brother John Bielenberg playing a major role. The ranch endured the collapse of the open-range era by adopting modern methods after the disastrous winter of 1886–1887, and it remains a living history ranch illustrating how cattle ranching shaped the American West.
