As York County's population grew quickly from 120,000 people in 1900 to over 350,000 in 2000, water supply needs expanded beyond simply gathering water from streams or wells. The East Branch of Codorus Creek feeds Lake Williams and Lake Redman, man-made reservoirs built to supply water year-round. Lake Williams, the watershed's first reservoir, was constructed in 1913, with mule-drawn wagons hauling dirt wagons and carrying building material. By 1968, Lake Williams could no longer store enough water on its own, so the York Water Company built Lake Redman. Together the two lakes hold 3.1 billion gallons of water. In 2004, the York Water Company completed a pipeline from the Susquehanna River that draws water in times of severe drought, capable of pulling millions of gallons a day.
