Mount Wellington rises about 600 feet above Otsego Lake at its northern end in central New York, just south of Springfield Center, and forms one of the defining landforms at the head of the water. Known from Cooperstown as the Sleeping Lion because its outline resembles a reclining lion, it includes an extreme southern point called Clarke Point, also known as the Shad Cam. Originally named Mount Millington, it was later renamed by George Hyde Clarke to honor Field Marshal Arthur Wellesley, the 1st Duke of Wellington, victor of Waterloo and Clarke’s former schoolmate at Eton College in England.
