Christopher "Old Kit" Barbee was a farmer and blacksmith who in 1792 donated 221 acres, the first and largest land tract given to UNC. Stones mark the probable site of the eighteenth-century Barbee residence, which was recycled as heartpine paneling for the library of Dubose House. One of Kit's great-granddaughters married William R. Kenan, Sr. Vivian Barbee Cox and Faris Barbee contributed to documenting the history of Meadowmont.
