In Mentor, Ohio, Lawnfield preserves the home and estate of James A. Garfield, twentieth president of the United States. Garfield bought the property in 1876 for his large family, as a summer residence, and as a place where his sons could learn farming, while also shifting his base after Ohio redistricting. The house gained national fame during the 1880 election, when Garfield conducted a pioneering successful front porch campaign there. After his death in 1881, Lucretia Garfield added the Memorial Library in 1885, creating the nation’s first presidential library. Extensive restoration later returned the house to its late nineteenth-century appearance with remarkable accuracy.
