The Aden site in western Mississippi, on the south bank of Jeff Davis Bayou east of Valley Park, is the type site for the Aden phase of Coles Creek culture, dated to 800–900 CE in the Lower Yazoo Basin. Its three platform mounds form a triangular arrangement around a small plaza, with the bayou creating the fourth side, a layout seen as typical of planned Coles Creek settlements. The site gave its name to a phase defined to provide a clear reference point for “classic” Coles Creek culture, and its pottery and settlement pattern have made it an important guide to how these communities were organized before later regional traditions emerged.
