The Saville was one of Petoskey's most popular hotels around the turn of the century, standing at the top of the Midway bazaar on the southeast corner of Petoskey and Bay Street with a commanding view of Little Traverse Bay. Built and first operated by P.D. Banghart in 1885, it was originally known as the Banghart. William B. Saville acquired it in 1908 and renamed it the New Saville. Over time the hotel changed hands many times and was known by several names, including Northern, New Northern, New Central, and Chippewa, and from 1910-1918 it was operated as the Saville Sanatorium.
