Wolf Trap in northern Virginia, near Vienna, is a performing arts center on national park land and the only unit of the U.S. National Park System created specifically for the performing arts. Its name reaches back to colonial-era records, while its modern form began with Catherine Filene Shouse, who assembled the property and in 1966 donated land for a new federal park devoted to performance. The Filene Center became its main venue, surviving one fire and being rebuilt after another destroyed it in 1982. With theaters, education programs, opera training, and nationally prominent performances, Wolf Trap has endured as a major summer arts destination.
