Family Burial Plot of Capt. John Horton
History
3
Capt. John Horton was a pioneer of Jackson and an officer in the State Militia. This area was commonly called "Bear Corners" because of the many black bears along Thompson Creek. After Horton and Ficklin established the town, it was named Buncombe after their native county in North Carolina. In 1815 the town was officially named Jackson, in honor of Andrew Jackson, hero of the battle of New Orleans.
