Czech Texans and members of Lodge Texasky Mir No. 10 Shiner established this cemetery on April 14, 1906, to provide a burial place for SPJST members and their families. Local and regional SPJST ministers conducted funeral and burial services in the Czech language. The cemetery contains over 200 burials, with many Catholic and Protestant Czech names on the headstones, and more than forty inscriptions in Czech. Gravestones include granite, marble, and funeral company markers. Before 1970, a metal arch at the entrance bore the Czech words "Narodni Hrbitov" meaning "National Cemetery." All graves are oriented with feet to the east, following a Czech cultural tradition. None of the SPJST charter members are buried there, but several charter members from lodges outside Shiner are, including Jakub Vackar of Lodge No. 19, Velehrad, who was president of the Congregation of Freethinkers in Lavaca and Fayette counties and of other area lodges. Some members of the Odbocka C.N.S. of Shiner, a branch of the Czech National Association that helped raise funds for the new nation of Czechoslovakia, are also buried there. The cemetery also includes many veterans of World War I, World War II, and the Korean War, reflecting the strong fraternal bonds of the Czech community. The SPJST District VI Cemetery Organization, established in 2002, maintains the historic cemetery.
