On this site stood the old Mount Zion Baptist Church, known locally as "The Cvil Rights Church" and demolished in 1993. During the Civil Rights Movement, it hosted a Freedom School in 1964 and many mass meetings. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke here on March 19, 1968, two weeks before his assassination in Memphis.
