Edwards County was formed from Bexar County, created on February 1, 1858, and organized on September 10, 1883. It was named in honor of Haden Edwards, 1770-1848, an empresario and leader of the Fredonian War in 1827. Its county seat was Leakey in 1883 and has been Rocksprings since 1890.
