The Old Savannah Road was one of the earliest vehicular routes west of the Ogeechee River. It ran from Savannah to the Rock Landing on the Oconee, south of present Milledgeville, where it connected with the main course of the noted Lower Creek Trading Path from Augusta to the Creek Indians of western Georgia. The State authorized the opening of this lower stretch in 1777, and when Milledgeville became the capital, the thoroughfare was extended there. Much of the original route remains in use.
