On August 20, 1861, Company F of the 7th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment received an American flag at a farewell picnic in a grove on the John H. Van Nuys farm. The 34-star flag had been sewn by ladies of Hopewell Presbyterian Church. William “Billy” Davis twice took up the battle-torn colors when the bearer was killed.
