In Butte, Montana, the Mai Wah Museum preserves the history of Asian people in the Rocky Mountains through two adjoining historic buildings, the Wah Chong Tai building and the Mai Wah Noodle Parlor building. Its significance is rooted in Butte’s Chinese community, once part of the largest Chinatown between Minneapolis and Seattle, and in the Chinn family. Chin Hin Doon came from Guangdong province and by 1894 was a merchant at the Wah Chong Tai Company; in the 1930s his son Albert Chinn ran the business, providing services and lodging to local Chinese residents. The Wah Chong Tai Mercantile, in its present building since 1899, survives as the country’s only remaining original early 20th-century Chinese store.
