Brundidge was founded in 1851 and incorporated in 1890. Since November 1992, Brundidge City Hall has occupied the former Bass House on South Main Street in downtown Brundidge, a house restored as one of the county’s most beautiful structures. Built in 1906 for Fletcher C. Bass by master carpenter Ben Andrews, the Bass Home belonged to a family known in Brundidge and Pike County for culture and business acumen. Brundidge also played a pioneering role in the Southeast’s peanut butter industry. In 1928, Brundidge native J.D. Johnston, seeing peanut butter’s growing popularity as an inexpensive source of protein, set up a crude machine in the upstairs of a wood-frame building off Main Street and began one of the first commercial peanut butter mills in the Southeast. The Johnston Peanut Butter Mill soon shipped more than two million jars each year, and during the Great Depression it helped sustain the town by providing jobs and a steady supply of inexpensive protein. In the late 1940s, small peanut butter mills began to decline as large processing companies became too much competition. Brundidge continues to celebrate its place in the peanut butter industry with an annual Peanut Butter Festival on the last Saturday in October.
