In 1847, black and white residents of Vandalia and Cassopolis stopped 13 slave catchers from taking 9 kidnapped slaves back to Kentucky. Showing courage and determination against what they saw as a grave injustice, they helped ensure that the freedom seekers were allowed to testify in court, and the freedom seekers won.
