Nature
Cabeza Prieta Wilderness is a vast protected expanse in the Sonoran Desert of southwestern Arizona and the largest designated wilderness area in the state. Covering 803,418 acres and nearly 93 percent of the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge, it has a land area larger than Rhode Island. Its significance lies not only in its immense scale but also in its extreme remoteness, which helps preserve one of Arizona’s most expansive undeveloped desert landscapes. Parts of the area are affected by the nearby Barry M. Goldwater Air Force Range, bringing occasional closures, safety hazards from unexploded bombs, and restrictions limiting vehicle travel to designated public-use roads.
