At Delaware Botanic Gardens at Pepper Creek, the Restroom Pavilion uses rainwater harvesting and processing based on green technology best management practices to help protect water quality. Rain landing on the roof is collected, stored, and redirected through rain chains, a 1000-gallon stainless steel cistern, a living wall, a dry creek bed, and several rain gardens. As rain moves across the roof, it can pick up salts, metals, resins, and other pollutants. Gutters carry the water to a funneling scupper with an attached rain chain or to openings that feed four other rain chains. These rain chains replace downspouts, helping reduce overflow, flooding, and erosion. Water then falls through the chain links into collecting agents and is directed into the cistern, the dry creek bed, or the living wall for reuse. The cistern has a hose bib connection leading to irrigation spouts for the rain gardens. Plants in the rain gardens take up and filter pollutants through their root systems and trap excess sediment in their foliage. This system slows the flow of rainwater, reduces its volume, and sends cleaner water into the ground and tidal Pepper Creek. Native rain garden plants identified here include Cardinal flower, Ostrich fern, Elderberry, and Buttonbush.
