Big Slough Wilderness is a 3,455-acre protected area in the Davy Crockett National Forest of eastern Texas. Designated in 1984 by the Texas Wilderness Act, it became part of the National Wilderness Preservation System and is the smallest wilderness in the state. The land shows both past use and recovery: logging occurred here during the 1800s, and the present forest is regrowth composed mostly of hardwoods, with smaller areas of shortleaf and loblolly pine, some mixed forest, and a small amount of water. Its importance lies in preserving a quiet, regenerating section of national forest under strict federal wilderness protection.
