John Otherday was born at Swan Lake, Minnesota, and was converted to Christianity by Protestant missionaries. In 1857, he led the rescue of Abbie Gardner from hostile Indians on the James River near Redfield, and in 1862 he rendered heroic service protecting whites during the Minnesota uprising. He was buried on Big Coulee Creek, 12 miles north of Wilmot, and his body was brought here in 1926.
