Around July 1850, emigrant wagon trains bound for California camped near here on a landscape with a wide plain to the left, high mountains to the right, and the Salt Lake Route visible nearby, intersecting the trail seven miles farther on. In morning or afternoon, wagon trains passed from left to right, while at midday some stopped to noon and find relief from the sun. In the evening, trains halted for the night, with emigrants preparing meals, herding livestock to pasture, and discussing plans for the next day, and after dark campfires flickered across the area. Good water from springs and streams flowing from the mountains behind this place drew many emigrant parties to camp here before entering the City of Rocks. In the distance to the right, dust could also rise from wagon trains moving westward on the Salt Lake Alternate, a route by way of Salt Lake City that rejoined the main trail a few miles southwest of here.
