Alexander Cave in Perry County, Tennessee, near the Duck River, is significant both archaeologically and ecologically. Before European settlement, Native Americans likely used the cave for shelter, as suggested by mussel shells and worked stone tools found near its entrance. The cave also provides important wildlife habitat, especially as a roosting site for gray bats. In 2005, the surrounding land was purchased by a Florida businessman and donated to The Nature Conservancy to ensure the cave’s preservation and protection.
