Saint Francis de Sales, the mother church in the civil parish of Terrebonne, was founded in 1847. The Reverend Canon Charles Menard, known as the Apostle of Lafourche and Terrebonne, laid the foundation of the parish through his intrepid zeal. During the tenure of the first pastor, Fr. Z. Leveque, the church was dedicated to Almighty God under the title of St. Francis de Sales, patron of the Catholic Press, priest of God, Bishop of Geneva, true Pastor of souls, and Defender of the Faith. Fr. August Vanderbilt, serving from 1914 to 1938, inspired the people of God to erect the present edifice in 1936. In this Bicentennial year, the people of St. Francis de Sales rededicate themselves to the ideals of their founding fathers.
