Hugh Cole was born in London, England, in 1627 and died in Swansea, Mass, in 1699. He was an honorable and useful citizen of Plymouth Colony, served for many years as a representative of Swansea, Mass, and was a sergeant in King Philip's War in 1675. He was also an esteemed friend of King Philip, from whom he purchased his claim in 1669. In 1677 he excavated a well on his home farm, which remained in his family's possession until Miss Abby Cole gave it to the Town of Warren, R.I.
