South Fork State Recreation Area, about five miles south of Elko, is a Nevada state park spanning nearly 4,000 acres around the 1,650-acre South Fork Reservoir. Its marshes, meadows, and low hills were once part of Tomera Ranch, sold to the state in 1983. That same year, construction of South Fork Dam on the South Fork of the Humboldt River was authorized; the dam was completed in 1988, and the reservoir finished filling in 1995. The area now supports camping, boating, and fishing, with a 25-site campground, boat ramp, and access near the dam, while South Fork Canyon below serves hiking, floating, and fishing.
