The first permanent store in Kyle was built in 1881 by David Alexander Young, who was born in 1841 and died in 1883. Young moved with his parents to Texas from Tennessee in 1857. One of 179 Hays County men in the Civil War, he was wounded while fighting in Woods' 32nd Cavalry. When the International & Great Northern Railway came into Kyle, Young and his wife, Fannie Elizabeth, moved there from Mountain City. In 1936, M. G. Michaelis, Sr., an early-day rancher, gave the building to the city of Kyle.
