The last meeting of the Confederate States Cabinet that could be called such was held at the Burt House in Abbeville on May 2, 1865. Present were Jefferson Davis, President; Judah P. Benjamin, Secretary of State; John C. Breckenridge, Secretary of War; S.R. Mallory, Secretary of Navy; and John H. Reagan, Post Master Gen'l. At the same time, a council of war was held with the cabinet, attended by W.C. Breckenridge, Geo. G. Dibrell, Basil W. Duke, S.W. Ferguson, J.C. Vaughn, and Braxton Bragg. After mature deliberation and discussion, it was decided that it was useless to continue the war longer and that the government should be disbanded.
