Salem Baptist Church was organized on September 11, 1854, by elders J.L. Simpson and George H. Washington. It was the oldest church in the old 8th Ward. In the early 1900's, the church was used as a public school. Storms destroyed it in 1908-1909. It was served by Old Fields P.O. from 1856 to 1935.
