On August 3, 1804, after breakfast, a party gathered Indians under an awning of the main sail, in the presence of others, and delivered a long speech about their journey, the works of their government, advice to them, and directions for how they were to conduct themselves toward the party in peace. They gave them a cannister of powder and a few presents, including some paint, quartering, and a medal to those they made chiefs.
