Adolph Strieber served in Company G, 16th Illinois Cavalry from April 1, 1863 to August 15, 1865. He enlisted as a private in Springfield, Illinois, after crossing Confederate lines by walking, stagecoach, and steamboat. Like many Texas Germans, he believed the U.S. should be kept together. Born in Zellerfield, Germany, he came to Texas by way of Old Indianola with his parents in 1846, married Marie Wagenschien in 1866, and became a pioneer merchant and prominent citizen.
