The Wilderness Act of 1964 defines wilderness as land affected primarily by the forces of nature. In federally designated wilderness such as the Big Run area, management is carried out with restraint so nature can work on its own time. Allowing natural events such as floods and fires to run their course restores balance to the land, and limited human interference helps healthy ecosystems flourish. Wilderness protects water, air, and habitats for plants and wild animals, helping ensure that the waters of Big Run flow out of Shenandoah clean and clear for the benefit of all who live downstream, including us.
