Watrous, also known as La Junta in New Mexico, was the western junction of the Santa Fe Trail and was recognized in 1964 as a Registered National Historic Landmark under the Historic Sites Act of August 21, 1935 because the site possesses exceptional value in commemorating and illustrating the history of the United States.
