Rose Hill Plantation in South Carolina centers on the home of William H. Gist, the state's 68th governor, who used it as the governor's mansion from 1858 to 1860 while urging Southern governors to coordinate if Abraham Lincoln were elected and suggesting South Carolina might leave the Union first. Built between about 1811 and 1830 and later remodeled into an elaborate Greek Revival mansion, it was also a 2,000-acre plantation worked by enslaved laborers whose numbers grew from about 20 in 1820 to 178 by 1860. After emancipation it remained agricultural, and in the 20th century the house and grounds were restored and preserved.
