The Jacques Adoue Building is tied to the colorful career of Jacques Adoue (1851-1906), the youngest of three French brothers who came to Texas in the 1860s and became business leaders in Calvert, Dallas, and Galveston. Jacques Adoue owned numerous enterprises. This store, built for Collat, Adoue & Risser Dry Goods, set an ambitious style for the town. Friends said that Adoue's death, years later, from injuries sustained in the Calvert compress fire, marked the passing of an era.
