The McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture, on the University of Tennessee campus in Knoxville, opened in 1963 as a teaching museum and public cultural resource. Its collections and exhibits unite natural history and culture, with strengths in archaeology, anthropology, decorative arts, and the history of East Tennessee. Long-term galleries include The Decorative Experience, Geology and Fossil History of East Tennessee, Human Origins: Searching for Our Fossil Ancestors, and Tennessee Freshwater Mussels. A replica of Edmontosaurus annectens, known as Monty, stands outside the main building. The museum also presents changing special exhibitions and holds accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums and affiliation with the Smithsonian Institution.
