Monhegan Island Light stands on a hill near the center of Monhegan Island, Maine, and is among the state’s earliest coastal lights. Established in 1824 after congressional authorization in 1822, its present 47-foot granite tower was built in 1850 in the last significant design by Alexander Parris. With its height and elevation combined, it is Maine’s second highest light, surpassed only by Seguin Light. The compact station includes a keeper’s house, storage building, and oil house. Automated in 1959, the light is remotely managed from Manana Island Sound Signal Station, while the former keeper’s house now serves as the Monhegan Museum of Art & History.
