Stillman's Run Battle Site in Stillman Valley, Illinois, preserves the place of the first engagement of the Black Hawk War, fought on May 14, 1832, after Black Hawk crossed the Mississippi into Illinois with his Sauk and Meskwaki band. Illinois militia under Major Isaiah Stillman, numbering about 275, collapsed in panic before Sauk warriors, and 12 militiamen were killed while trying to hold a small hill before the survivors fled to Dixon's Ferry. The number of Sauk and Meskwaki dead remains uncertain. The battlefield later became a small memorial landscape, also remembered in Illinois for Abraham Lincoln's role in helping bury the dead.
