Nature
Wills Mountain State Park is an undeveloped Maryland state park on Wills Mountain at Cumberland’s northwest edge, overlooking the Cumberland Narrows. Before becoming protected public land, the mountain was the site of the Wills Mountain Inn, a large mansion that operated first as a fraternal clubhouse and country club, then as a sanatorium under Dr. Henry Fry after 1902, until fire destroyed it in 1930. Plans to preserve the mountain for public use emerged in 1952, but the park was not created until 1998 through land purchase and donation. Later acquisitions, including additions beginning in 2017 and in 2024, aimed to improve access and expand protection of this prominent overlook.
