Pony Creek Baptist Church was originally founded in 1865, and Rev. Henry Hurley, C.D. Skidmore, and Deacon J.M. McCarty, who founded the Bosque Church of the Primitive Baptist, were said to be involved in its establishment. Its first services were held on the fourth Sunday of each month at the Pony Creek School, and frequent Indian raids caused the church to be moved several times, with men standing at the doors on Sunday morning with six shooters and rifles to protect parishioners. Daniel Shipman was the first pastor. On December 5, 1898, J.V. Hargrove and Mary A. Parker made a warranty deed to the deacons of Pony Creek Baptist Church for one acre of land for a sum of $10.00; the deacons were J.F. Carr, L.P. Evans, and J.L. Keahey. The present building was built soon afterward in 1898 or early 1899. The church's largest membership was 76 in 1893, but in the 1960's lack of attendance forced it to close its doors. The doors were reopened on Dec. 23, 2001, with a rededication service and 27 people in attendance. It later became well established with Mike DeVivo serving as interim pastor, a large number of youth in attendance, Jonnie Hartsfield as the only existing charter member of the church, and members including Mr. and Mrs. Albert Riley, the great, great, great grandson of Rev. Henry Hurley, and the Kitchens, Hill, Lujan, Basey, Wilborn, Cox, Myers, and DeVivo families.
