Around 1915, this 16-foot canoe belonged to William Ambrose Cox of Barnegat, New Jersey. Born in 1900 and dying in 1939, he attended Westtown Friends School, owned and operated a lumber yard and Cox's Dairy, and came from a Barnegat family whose roots included his father, William Cox, an area real estate investor, and his mother, Mary Etta Collins Cox, the daughter of one of the town's early Quaker settlers.
