Established in 1838 at the north end of New Orleans’s New Basin Canal, the New Canal Light guided traffic between Lake Pontchartrain and the city’s Uptown section. Rebuilt several times as harsh lakefront conditions and repeated hurricane damage took their toll, it evolved from a small cypress tower into the larger structure associated with the site today. The canal was later filled, but the lighthouse remained at the lakefront, was moved in 1910, and eventually stood on land after 1936. After severe damage from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005, it was reconstructed in 2012–2013. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985, it now serves as a museum and education center.
