Bishop Mountain Lookout stands near Island Park, Idaho, in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest atop the 7,810-foot summit of Bishop Mountain, an extinct volcanic vent on the rim of the Island Park Caldera. Built between 1936 and 1938 by Civilian Conservation Corps Company 2515 from Camp Porcupine, it formed part of the United States Forest Service fire detection network during the New Deal and Great Depression. The site includes a 72-foot steel tower with a steel cab, a rustic one-room log cabin with screened porch, and a vault toilet. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986, it remains both a surviving public works landmark and a reservable Forest Service destination.
