Spring Point Ledge Light stands in South Portland, Maine, beside the main shipping channel into Portland Harbor, marking the hazardous Spring Point Ledge. Built in 1897 as a compact sparkplug lighthouse after repeated groundings prompted complaints from steamship companies, it was first lit on May 24, 1897, by keeper William A. Lane. A fog bell warned ships in poor visibility, and the station later was electrified in 1934 and automated in 1960. A granite breakwater completed in 1951 linked it to the mainland. Now near Southern Maine Community College and Fort Preble, it remains an active aid to navigation and a historic landmark.
