Lake Herman State Park in Lake County, South Dakota centers on the 1,350-acre Lake Herman, named for nearby settler Herman Luce. The park preserves Luce’s 1871 log cabin and became part of the state park system in 1945, when South Dakota added it along with Hartford Beach and Oakwood Lakes; before that, only Custer State Park was state managed. Open year-round, it is known chiefly for recreation, including camping, swimming, fishing, boating, hiking, birdwatching, canoeing, disc golf, and winter cross-country skiing. Its facilities include 72 campsites with electric hook-ups, four cabins, and three hiking trails.
