In 1775, Daniel Boone blazed a 100-mile route from the Tennessee-Virginia border to Cumberland Gap that became known as the Wilderness Trail, the Warrior's Path, or the Wilderness Road. Following a route through the Cumberland Gap, it opened lands west of the Appalachian Mountains to settlement and provided a passage through a mountain barrier that had long blocked early settlers in the mid-Atlantic area and the Carolinas. From 1775 to 1810, about 250,000 men, women, and children crossed the Cumberland Gap into the wilds of "Kentuckee," and the movement of these immigrants turned people of various nationalities into Americans.
